The movie Saturday Night Fever (1977) is what made it take off.
Rock 'n' rollers were horrified at not being cool any more.
They began a disinformation campaign with the slogan " Disco is dead".
Well it worked. But Hustle survives in the dance styles it came from.
Tango being its strongest influence.
Their is even a movement to make it into a ballroom style of dance.
As for Rock 'n' roll I say let Hip Hop bury it.
