  • JCC-UNF MATCH April 3,2005 by Scott Pfieffer
  • Gorgeous, blue skies, a soft breeze, and wonderfully temperate weather provided the backdrop for a beautiful Sunday afternoon of chess on the campus of the University of North Florida. The school's collegiate chess squad, although decidedly outrated board for board, fought gamely and chalked up stiff resistance in the early going. It was evident that the young scholars had come to play.
  • Avoiding disasters at the outset, most of the students games were level or close to it going into the middle and beginnings.
  • But, on a day when an Osprey baseball team was having it's way with the visiting Lander Senators, UNF's chessers ultimately found themselves on the receiving end of a 7-1 barrage at the hands of the more experienced Jacksonville Chess Club team, led by U.S. Amateur Team South crewmates Andrew Cunanan, Dave Lamb, and Eddie Briones. Special thanks to UNF student/organizer Yi Hua and Adam Davis, President of the JCC, for arranging the match.
