Perhaps the greatest works of literature is The Divine Comedy written by Dante Alighieri (1321)
 Dante was not afraid to say Icons went to hell.

 All the others you see in this place Sowed scandal and schism when they were alive, 
And thus are now split wide.
 Dante was the Salman Rushdie of his day. 
 Averroes writings on Philosophy must have been popular in the Europe.
 In Cantos IV Averroes is in the limbo part of hell. 
 "Down to the blind world we'll go," Said the poet, his face losing color, "I'll descend first, and then you'll follow." And I, who had observed his pallor,
 Asked: "How can I follow with the sight Of fear on the face of my protector?"
