2007 Jacksonville City Scholastic Chess Championship Report

                                 by Scott Pfeiffer, Tournament Director

Saturday, February 10, marked the annual running of the Jacksonville City Scholastic Chess Championship, hosted by Jacksonville Country Day School for the 3rd year in a row since the tournaments inauguration.  A field of 96 players played 4 games of chess, battling it out over  64 black and white squares for the chance to earn 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place trophies in each of 4 divisions. Eligible participants hailed from local and regional public, private, and home schools.
In the Kindergarten through 2nd grade division, home schooled first grader Ajamn Brown chalked up a perfect score to capture top honors, followed by Maxwell Bustamante of St. John's Grammar School and Santora Jackson of Atlantic Beach Elementary.
Not to be outdone in the 3rd through 5th grade section, older brother Maurice Brown matched his younger sibling's performance with his own sparkling effort, winning his quad of games and scoring the highest tiebreak points to outpace another perfect performance by Carter Meyer of Hendricks Avenue Elementary. Hendrick's Avenue teammate Alex Molenaar  yielded only a draw to net 3rd place .
Beaches Depaul School 8th grader Keith Steffens posted the 3rd undefeated and perfect score of the day in the middle school competition to earn first place, with home schooled students John Nyren and Michael O'Neal garnering 2nd and 3rd places, respectively.
A contingent of Mandarin High students participated and won several honors.Dan Eddins, a last minute replacement, edged out several teammates on tiebreaks to capture third place, while Seacoast Christian's Rodney Pinckney scored a fine 3-1 for 2nd, topped only by Mandarin junior Paul Kaczarowski, who made it a perfect day for all the division winners by also blanking the opposition.
Special thanks go to host Jacksonville Country Day and school administrator Mike Morrow, chess coaches George Foote and Jay Lubeck, tournament officials Edwin Vergara, Soren Brockford, and Bud Kovach, concessions operator Tom Davidson, data entry guru Dave Lamb, local chess ambassador Brad Zang, and the many parents, relatives, and friends of our students for making a wonderful day of chess happen.
