Slav Noteboom Variation 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nc3 e6 4.Nf3

1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nc3 e6 4.Nf3

  • You may ask why not 6.e4 instead of 6.e3
  • 6.e4 is a weak line lets see how you can go wrong
  • 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nc3 e6 4.Nf3 dxc4 5.a4 Bb4 6.e4
  • 1.d4 d5 2.c4 c6 3.Nc3 e6 4.Nf3 dxc4 5.a4 Bb4 6.e4

Why is 6.e3 better then 6.e4

  • White loses the e pawn 12..Bxe4
  • 6... b5 7.Bd2 a5 8.axb5 Bxc3 9.Bxc3 cxb5 10.b3 Bb7 11.bxc4 b4 12.Bb2 Bxe4
  • 6... b5 7.Bd2 a5 8.axb5 Bxc3 9.Bxc3 cxb5 10.b3 Bb7

    11.bxc4 b4 12.Bb2 Bxe4 White loses the e pawn

    4...dxc4 5.a4Bb4 6.e3 b5

    4...dxc4 5.a4Bb4 6.e3 b5

    Main Line

    7.Bd2 a5 8.axb5 Bxc3

    7.Bd2 a5 8.axb5 Bxc3

  • This is the crossroad White has to go 10...Bb7 before he move the b pawn because the rook Bxb5 wins a pawn the Black rook is pinned
  • Now White can go 11.d5 or 11.bxc4
  • If you White takes back with the pawn 9.bxc3 (instead of 9.Bxc3) White will be down a pawn and have a terrible game.
  • 9.Bxc3 cxb5 10.b3 Bb7
  • 9.Bxc3 cxb5 10.b3 Bb7

    Crossroad

  • Main line 1
  • 11.d5 White now threatens 12. Bxg2
  • 11.d5

11... Nf6 is the Main Line

    11... Nf6

    Main Line

  • Why not 11..f6 because 13.Bxc4 has some fun tactics
  • Still this is a fun variant
  • 11... f6 12.bxc4 b4 13.Bxb4
  • 11... f6 12.bxc4 b4 13.Bxb4

15....e5 is a very important move. It connects Blacks Queen with its Queen side

    15....e5

    15...e5 a very important move

  • 17.Nxa5 is Wrong
  • 16.Nb3 Ke7 17.Nxa5 Qb6
  • note Nxa5 fails because Blacks Queen can go to b6
  • 16.Nb3 Ke7 17.Nxa5 Qb6

  • If the Queen tries to come in 17...Ba6 is the best move but don't grab the a pawn
  • 16.Nb3 Ke7 17.Qb5 Ba6

  • Because of the move 17...Ba6 the main line is not the Queen attack 17.Qb5
  • 17.Be2 is considered better. It allows two Sub variants.
  • In Sub Variant 1A White brings his bishop to g4 18.Bg4 and attack the knight at d7
  • In Sub Variant 1B White to castle and attack the center 18.0-0
  • 17.Be2 Rhc8
  • 17...Rhc8 is a great move. It will support a knight at c5 and allow Blacks king to slip back to his side if neccessary keeping the rooks together.
  • 17.Be2 Rhc8

  • Sub Variant 1A
  • 18.Bg4 Qd6
  • 18...Qd6 is neccessary here it protect the Knight on d7 and the b pawn on b4. Just in case white decides to take the a pawn with his knight he would be forced to give up his queen in the latter combination.
  • Note again 15..e5 allowed the queen to get to d6 18...Qd6
  • 18.Bg4 Qd6

    19.Nxa5 Rxa5 20.Qxa5 Ra8

    19.Nxa5 Rxa5 20.Qxa5 Ra8

  • 21.Qxa8 Bxa8 22.Rxa8 Qg6 23.Bxd7 Qb1+
  • You have to like black's game here
  • 21.Qxa8 Bxa8 22.Rxa8 Qg6 23.Bxd7 Qb1+

  • Sub Variant 1B
  • This is the other major line black by 18...Nc5 gets rid of whites dangerous knight
  • 18.O-O Nc5
  • 18.O-O Nc5

20.Rad1 is the logical move for white. It supports pushing the d pawn and also leaves a rook on the f pawn if needed for an f pawn attack.
  • 20...Kf8 is the best move for Black
  • Why? White threatens 21.Qc2 his Queen now attacks the pawn at h7. If Blacks king were not at f8 to move 21...Kg8 to protect the pawn at h7. He would have to weaken the kingside by moving a pawn say 21..g6. Then White can open his f file with moves like 22.f4 helping attack the king in the center with his rook.

12.Bd2 is a weak line. It turns out b2 is a better place to put the bishop. (see game below)

  • In the favorite line of GM's Both side apply pressure on e4
  • 12. .. Nf6 13. Bd3
  • 12. .. Nf6 13. Bd3

  • Black sometimes tries to restrain e4 by placing his knight there.
